Attendance
Last year Golden Avenue had the best attendance rate in the district! Let’s continue to do our part to hold onto this title. Attendance and being on time is incredibly important to your child’s education. The school day starts promptly at 8:15 a.m. with a school-wide message on the blacktop. Students are expected to be in their class line on the blacktop at the 8:15 a.m. bell. Please help your child get off to a great start by being on time each and every day. In the event that your child is absent, please call the attendance hotline at (619) 825-5742. “On Time! Every Day! That’s the Golden Avenue Way!â€
Before and After School Programs
To ensure student safety, students should be picked up by 2:40 p.m. There are several after school programs families can consider for after school childcare. The Lemon Grove School District’s Extended Day Program provides a before and after school learning program. The program is free of charge and includes access to a wide array of learning and physical activities. Space is limited and currently there is a waiting list. For more information please call (619) 825-5600 ext 2655. In addition, there is a YMCA Childcare program on campus. For more information and for childcare rates, please call their main office at (619) 464-1323.
Our Cafeteria Program
Our cafeteria provides a healthy breakfast and a nutritious lunch each day for FREE. This year, the school district will operate a Non-Price Meal Program. All schools in the district will offer Breakfast in the Classroom. This program will allow all students the opportunity to eat breakfast as the school day gets started. The goal of the program is to increase the opportunity for students to get their day off with a healthy start.
Snacks
In an effort to address the childhood obesity crisis only healthy snacks (e.g. fruit, veggies, etc.) and healthy drinks (e.g. water, milk, 100% juice drinks) are to be consumed by Golden Avenue students during recess and lunch time. This year, the Lemon Grove School District’s Nutrition Services Department will provide fruit and vegetable snacks during recesses to the students for no-charge. Students can take advantage of the snack opportunity or families can send their child to school with a healthy snack. Together, we can battle the obesity crisis and develop healthy eating habits.
August 14, 2011
Dear Golden Avenue Students and Families,
Welcome to the 2011/12 school year at Golden Avenue Elementary School! I hope your summer has been enjoyable and you are getting ready for another wonderful school year. This will be definitely be another exciting year of learning, friends and fun at golden avenue elementary.
As you plan the next couple weeks you will want to pay close attention to the following dates and times:
September 6th First Day of School
August 23rd Office Opens (enrollment hours 8:00 – 2:30)
September 2nd (1:00) Kindergarten Orientation
September 2nd (9:00) Preschool Orientation
September 2nd Class Lists posted at 5:00 at the front of the school
In addition, please note that our school hours have changed. School will now start promptly at 8:15 with a morning assembly on the blacktop and end at 2:25.
We will also have a free Breakfast in the Classroom program for all students who would like to eat breakfast as the school day begins. The traditional breakfast program will no longer be available. Breakfast and lunch will remain free to all Golden Avenue students.
On another note, I am proud to share that once again our school has demonstrated exceptional growth on the state tests. Based on the preliminary state testing data Golden Avenue is now the highest performing school in the Lemon Grove School District; light years above where the school was just a few years ago. However, this is no surprise to me as I have the pleasure of watching our students and teachers work hard on a daily basis. As we say at Golden Avenue, “together, anything is possible!â€
As you know our goal is not only to develop academically strong students, but to develop the whole child. With this in mind, I am ecstatic that we will once again offer a wide variety of programs for our students. Our performing arts/wellness teacher Ms. Petway will be back and not only will we have one P.E. teacher, but this year we will have two. We will also continue our wide range of enrichment classes after school to complement a morning physical activity program that will start shortly into the school year. This program will take place every morning from 7:40 to 8:10 and will include a variety of activity circuits for students (and parents) to get the day off to a healthy start. More information about this program will be forthcoming. In addition, we will have a wide range of counseling and social work services for our students and families as well as the continuation of the free health clinic in collaboration with UCSD’s School of Medicine. For details about any of these programs feel free to contact me personally.
To get the year off to a great start our PTA Executive Board and I welcome you to the First Day Parent Social on September 6th at 8:30 a.m. Coffee and breakfast items will be provided, plus you will get an early start on all of the exciting events that are just around the corner. I hope you can join us!
The arrival of a new school year always brings about a great deal of excitement. This year will definitely live up to these expectations. On behalf of the Golden Avenue staff, thank you for your partnership and the opportunity to educate your child. This is a privilege that we fully enjoy and cherish!
Sincerely,
Rick Oser
